Arcade and pinball preservation is a genuine race against physics. Every board, every tube, every chip in this hobby is aging on a fixed clock, and unlike a lot of historical artifacts, some of this technology simply cannot be manufactured again with current industrial capacity — once the remaining supply is gone, it’s gone.
The CRT Problem
Arcade-grade CRT monitors haven’t been manufactured in meaningful volume since roughly the mid-2000s, as the entire display industry shifted to flat-panel technology. This means every working arcade CRT in existence today is drawing from a finite, non-renewable supply — there’s no factory anywhere currently tooled up to produce new ones. Restoration and recapping work can extend a tube’s working life substantially, but it can’t manufacture entirely new picture tubes once the existing supply is genuinely exhausted, which makes proper monitor-chassis restoration knowledge one of the most time-sensitive skills in the entire hobby.
ROM and Chip Degradation
Less visible but equally serious: the actual memory chips storing a game’s code and graphics data degrade over time. Older UV-erasable EPROM chips in particular can experience genuine bit rot — the slow loss of stored data — over a span of decades, especially if a chip’s UV-erase window wasn’t properly covered or shielded from ambient light exposure over the years. A board that boots perfectly today isn’t guaranteed to boot perfectly in another twenty years without active preservation work, which is exactly why the ROM-dumping and verification practices covered elsewhere in this hobby matter as much for long-term history as for immediate practical use.
The Expertise Problem
Beyond the hardware itself, there’s a genuine and worsening shortage of technicians who deeply understand this specific era of electronics — component-level board repair, vector monitor servicing, and CRT chassis work are increasingly niche skills as the original generation of arcade technicians ages out of the workforce. Hobbyist forums and YouTube restoration channels have done real work transferring this knowledge to a new generation, but it remains a genuine bottleneck for preservation at scale.
Organizations Doing This Work
- The Video Game History Foundation — founded in 2017 by Frank Cifaldi, focused specifically on preserving source code, design documents, and other pre-release materials that would otherwise be lost entirely, and actively involved in advocating for legal exemptions that support preservation work.
- The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment (MADE) — a volunteer-run nonprofit in Oakland, California, maintaining a working, playable arcade floor alongside its archival mission.
- The International Center for the History of Electronic Games (ICHEG) — housed at The Strong museum in Rochester, New York, maintaining an extensive research archive of hardware, software, and industry documentation.
The Legal Dimension
Preservation work has real legal complexity attached to it: a 2018 exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) allowed libraries, archives, and museums limited ability to legally preserve and provide access to out-of-print video games under specific restricted conditions — a meaningful step forward that preservation advocates had pushed for specifically because so much gaming history exists in a legal gray zone between “someone technically still owns this copyright” and “no company is actually selling or supporting this anymore.”
What Individual Collectors Can Do
- Learn and practice proper storage conditions — stable temperature and humidity meaningfully slow component degradation across the board.
- Document everything about boards and cabinets you own, including serial numbers and condition notes, contributing to the broader historical record even at a small scale.
- Support preservation-focused organizations, whether through membership, donations, or simply amplifying their work within the collecting community.
This hobby is, in a real sense, a form of active historical preservation, not just collecting — every properly maintained board and tube is buying time against a clock that genuinely cannot be reset once it runs out.
